The City of Toronto saw an increase in the number of homeless encampments throughout the city following the arrival of COVID-19, with some concerned over the crowding at shelters. On Wednesday, July 21, 2021, Toronto Police went to clear out the encampment at Lamport Stadium Park. The clearing of the encampment, where homeless people set up tents at the park, turned violent as police clashed with protesters, with police arresting over 20 people. Toronto cited making the parks accessible to everyone and safety concerns like fire risks as reasons for the clearings. The removal of this encampment was one of three clearings to take place that summer, which combined, the city says cost almost $2 million.
